Akustino TAE
Hearing: 21 April 2022

In Attendance: [withheld] (Case Manager)
Support persons: [withheld]
DECISION OF THE BOARD
- Akustino Tae was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment for wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm with a firearm.
- The Board has now been provided with a full psychological report dated 4 March 2022. Mr Tae was assessed at being a moderate risk of general re‑offending and a medium risk of violent re‑offending, but due to his lack of rehabilitative progress a formal assessment of his release with feasibility was not able to be conducted.
- The recommendation was that he attend the Saili Matagi Programme, or an equivalent Medium Intensity Rehabilitation Programme. Due to [withheld] Mr Tae was not able to be transferred to undertake the Saili Matagi Programme.
- However, Mr Tae has commenced individual psychological treatment on 11 April 2022, which will continue until necessary. Although he had completed individual treatment with an external psychologist, the Departmental psychologist assessed that he had not retained content from it.
- Mr Tae was very realistic about the outcome today. He acknowledged that he needs individual psychological treatment and that prior to release he will need to participate in a whānau hui. Work has already been done through his counsel and [withheld] as to where he would live on release and what support would be available to him.
- Mr Tae acknowledged that he would need about 12 months to complete any treatment.
- Parole is declined as Mr Tae is untreated and his risk undue. He will be seen again by the Board in April 2023 and no later than the end of that month.
